Hidden Gems in Derbyshire for Artisan Meats, Breads, Sweets & Cheeses to Elevate Your Grazing Table

Derbyshire is home to a handful of butchers and charcuterie makers who are keeping traditional skills alive while serving up the kind of quality meats that can transform any event. From family-run stalls in Derby Market Hall offering hand-crafted sausages and dry-cured bacon, to independent shops known for their speciality cuts and locally sourced produce, these businesses are true hidden gems. By choosing a Derbyshire producer, you’re not only guaranteed fresh, flavourful meats but also a connection to the city’s food heritage and supporting local community. I’m putting forward the list of best local producers which I know from my experience.

Anthony Andrews Butchers

Anthony Andrews has been serving the city for generations. Known for its handmade sausages, dry-cured bacon, and locally sourced meats, this butcher is ideal if you’re looking to add traditional flavours to your grazing table and other types of catering. Their commitment to quality and craft makes them a trusted name among locals.

The Butcher, Baker Farm Shop

Nestled in the scenic Barton Marina, The Butcher Baker Farm Shop in Burton upon Trent offers a delightful blend of traditional butchery, artisanal baking, and locally sourced produce. This charming farm shop prides itself on providing high-quality meats, including premium Packington free-range pork, expertly butchered on-site. Their deli section features a tempting array of homemade pies, jams, and sweet treats from local producers like Cress, Springdale, Holleys, and TLC Bakery. This place is absolutely my favourite one.

Nigel’s Butchers

Nigel’s Butchers in Ashbourne is a family-run shop with over 40 years of history, known for its top-quality, locally sourced meat and traditional butchery skills. With a team boasting more than 130 years of combined experience, they offer everything from prime cuts of beef, lamb, pork, and poultry to handmade sausages, pies, and oven-ready dishes. Committed to animal welfare, traceability, and friendly customer service, Nigel’s has become a trusted favourite for both locals and visitors looking for honest, flavoursome produce

Barry Fitch Butchers

Barry Fitch Butchers, located on Alfreton Road in Little Eaton (Derby), has been a hallmark of quality since 1969. They specialise in supplying high-grade meats from their own riverside farm, alongside locally sourced free-range chickens, game, eggs and cheese — all prepared by knowledgeable, friendly butchers ready to cut to your specification. Whether you’re after classic steaks, homemade pies, pasties or something a bit more seasonal, Barry Fitch offers traditional service, excellent produce, and a genuine local flavour.

Independent Bakeries & Sweet Shops in Derby

Olivia’s Coffee & Bakery – Derby Market Hal

Olivia’s is a gem tucked in Derby Market Hall. They bake a wide range of artisan breads daily — country sourdough, seeded loaves, focaccias, bagels, baguettes — plus pastries like croissants, pain au chocolat, cinnamon rolls, plus cookies, brownies & blondies.

What makes them especially useful: they also do celebration cakes & deli-style sandwiches, and everything is fresh & hand-made. Good for picking up pastry & bread staples in one trip.

The Loaf

Loaf is a family-owned artisan bakery in the village of Crich, on the edge of the Peak District. They’ve been baking there for 100+ years.

They bake bread overnight, so you get fresh loaves in the morning. Their sourdough selection is excellent (sun-dried tomato sourdough, cheddar & Guinness etc.).  They also offer delivery.

Baked – Artisan Bakery & Cafe, Derby (Cathedral Quarter)

Baked is Derby’s artisan bakery & cafe located on The Strand.

They make everything from scratch, using traditional methods. Offerings include speciality loaves (for example spelt, chorizo & cheese, beer-bread) and sweet pastries/cakes.

Brownie Points Bakery – Derby City Centre

If you want treats, slices, traybakes etc., Brownie Points is a great pick. They bake fresh brownies, cookies, traybakes etc every day.  Not necessarily for heavy breads, but an excellent addition for the sweet side of grazing tables.

Glamberry – Artisan Bakery, Perkins Way

A bit more under-the-radar, Glamberry is an artisan bakery in Derby’s industrial estates. They do bespoke sweet treats & cakes.

Useful if you want decorative or statement pieces for your grazing table — cakes, decorative pastries, that kind of thing.

Derbyshire Cheese Makers & Shops

Hartington Creamery (Pikehall, Derbyshire Dales)

A heritage creamery making award-winning artisan cheeses using milk from the Derbyshire Dales. They produce several cheeses including Stilton, Dovedale Blue, Traditional Derby, and now the Sage Derby recipe restored to Derbyshire after over 125 years.

Why a gem: authentic, regional cheeses with strong provenance; great for adding strong blue or heritage cheese flavours.

Wakebridge Manor Creamery (near Crich, Derbyshire)

A newer artisan cheesemaker, Wakebridge is a family farm producing sheep’s milk cheeses. Their work has been recognised by national awards, which is impressive given how recently they started selling cheese commercially.

Why a gem: adds variety (sheep cheese is less common on grazing tables), a good story, and strong local credentials.

Cromford Mill Cheese Shop (Matlock area, Derbyshire)

Cromford Mill offers over 40 varieties of cheese, including the full Hartington range (Stilton, Dovedale Blue etc.), local artisan cheeses, and often vegan cheeses too. Great for variety.

Why a gem: for grazing tables you often want contrast (soft/firm, mild/strong, blue/plain), so a shop with wide variety makes it easy to build interest.

Derbyshire’s local producers offer everything you need to build a grazing table that truly stands out. By choosing these hidden gems, you’re not just creating food to share — you’re curating an experience filled with authentic flavours. And the best part?
